Stonewalls Musk was built around this gallery, not the other way round. Timber-clad, roofed in black standing-seam steel, set into the eucalypts — soaring, vaulted rooms hold Andrew O'Brien's large-scale abstracts the way they were meant to be seen: alone, in silence, at true scale.
The Artist
Andrew O'Brien has spent a lifetime looking — at colour, at light, at the way a room holds you. That way of seeing runs through everything at Stonewalls Musk, shaped by his hand over twenty-five years.
Oil and gold leaf, worked and reworked until the colour itself becomes the subject — the body of work that earned Andrew the title "Australia's master of colour."
Beyond the canvas, decades spent travelling the Indo-Pacific, collecting ceramics, curiosities and singular objects — the same eye, turned toward everything he brings home.
An artist who couldn't stop refining. Andrew built much of Stonewalls by hand — down to the dining table at The Barn, made from timber off the property's own forest.
Exhibitions
The gallery shows an ongoing collection of Andrew's large-scale abstracts, viewable during regular hours — no exhibition dates required.
Alongside the large-scale canvases, the gallery keeps a rotating selection of works on paper — smaller studies that let a single gesture or colour idea stand on its own. They're a way into the practice at a different pace: less about scale, more about the mark-making up close. Often, they're the first place a new body of work shows itself before it moves to canvas — on view throughout the gallery during regular hours.
Every frame leaving the gallery is made on-site, in a small workshop set up specifically for the collection. Boards are cut from hardwood harvested on the property itself — the same timber used throughout Stonewalls — hand-selected and fitted to measure for each individual piece. It means every work on paper and every canvas is framed as part of the same process that shaped the estate around it, not sent out to a separate framer.
The Art Bookstore
A working library, open alongside the gallery — built-in oak shelving holding a curated selection of art monographs and design references. Twombly, Scully, Basquiat, Richter, Kahlo, Rothko among them.
